Vale Gregory ScarfOur Society was extremely saddened and shocked at the recent passing of our President’s husband, Gregory Scarf, after a tragic accident at their property in Kangaroo Valley. Greg was a humble, quiet family man, who contributed greatly to the Shire breed in Australia and to our Society. He imported the first Shire mares into Australia in the 1980’s, after a 60 year period of no Shires. When we were incorporating our Society, the committee met at his farm many times and he provided hospitality, and attended and contributed to our meetings. He and Helene gave the Society the use of their property and holiday houses for our annual seminars over many years. Together, he and Helene bred many Shires and exhibited them at Sydney Royal for 30 years straight. Our sincere condolences to Helene, our President at this very sad time. Greg is on the right in this photo below, from our first Sydney Royal Shire function, 20 years ago. Next to him is Colin Brown and on the left Terry Gardner from the UK who judged the Shire Classes at Sydney Royal that year.Greg came up to the Sydney Royal Easter Show from Kangaroo Valley, to watch Helene present the new SHSA Helene Scarf Perpetual trophy for the Ridden Shire Class not very long before he died. He was so proud of her.Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Helene and their two sons Joe and Frank at this terribly sad time. ... See MoreSee Less

The Shire Horse is the English heavy draught horse breed.  It is the biggest horse in the world and has a long, well-documented history dating from when its ancestors were used by knights in battle hundreds of years ago.

The Shire Horse Society Australia promotes the breeding and showing of Shire Horses. The Shire Horse is an extremely versatile horse and we promote its use as a driving, riding and pleasure horse. Our committee upholds the breed standard in Australia by appointing an Official Panel of Judges and education about the breed.

The Society runs The Australian Shire Horse Stud Book, the Shire Shire Horse Registry and the Shire Sporthorse Registry.

We also provides services to its members and those interested in owning a Shire. We would love for you to join us in our mission to promote the future of the great Shire Horse both in Australia and globally as well.
